Grounding our pulse with Earth
While we reach with the sun, Earth’s location in the zodiac, always opposite, shows us how to replenish & ground our bodies.
The first time I saw Earth used as an astrological body, given a sign and meaning, was in a sister system to astrology, Human Design. Every cell in my body absorbed this concept with a HELL YES. It answered so many questions I had been digging into. I immediately started to play with inserting Earth into how I read astrology. It was like I had found a missing puzzle piece.
To understand how I use the Earth as part of an astrological lifestyle, I first need to bring the Sun into focus. The Sun is our orienting point. Our alignment with any other body in our solar system is determined by how we see it in relation to the Sun. To know what astrological season we are in, we note which zodiac sign the Sun is pulling us toward. It wants us to use its enlivening energy to reach and create toward a specific area.
While we look to the Sun for our astrological seasons, we can balance that aspiring energy by understanding Earth’s part in the music of the season. From a bird’s eye view, Earth will always orbit in the opposing sign to the Sun. Our night sky will point us toward the Earth sign. It’s where we find grounding and soothing during a season. It’s a perfect and elegant balance that takes place, never letting one side of an axis get too weighted (pathological). I love the night association with Earth—our incubator of life connected to the dark primordial soup of space. The yin (Earth) to the yang (Sun).
Like the left (yin) hand on the piano, Earth seems to me like she keeps the foundation—the beat of the moment. The thing that we clap our hands or move our bodies to. The matter of life. The pulse of life. The sign Earth is in says something about the pulse of the moment.
the solar seasons & our creative melodies
The quality of light in a given astrological solar season affects the energetics of our creative essence.
Because Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, aligning 0° of Aries with the Spring Equinox, there is a distinct seasonal quality to our solar seasons—Aries Season, Cancer Season, Libra Season... And if you’re wondering, I flip the zodiac for the Southern Hemisphere (if you want to know more about that, I go into detail in ‘A Journey Through our Stars’).
Continuing with my musical analogy, if Earth is the beat of a song, what is the Sun? In my estimation, the solar season is like the melody in a song. It enlivens the beat with expressiveness—the thing we hum that creates and dances upon the beat. It give the song a shape—ascending, descending, circular, wave-like…
For example, let’s say it’s Leo Season. This would mean Earth would oppositely be in Aquarius. What would an Aquarius beat sound like? Knowing that Aquarius is eclectic, original, likes to shake things up, and can hold space for a lot being the second to last sign of the zodiac, I would give it an irregular beat. A beat that switches up to entice something unexpected. The solar season would note the foundation and then add its expression. In Leo, the solar energy might come in with a warm and playful melody to sit atop the cool and erratic beat.
Even without adding the Moon into the mix, we’ve got a general seasonal vibe that we can tap into, adding more nuance to simply saying it’s summertime (and whatever general associations come with that).
the moody moon in our daily rhythms
Luna’s phases affect the emotion of our solar seasons, while her constant sign shifts unfurl different atmospheres.
When we look to attune to the lunar rhythms in our lives, we can first be met with total bafflement. One day she’s high up north, full in the night sky. The next time you sense her, she is more directly in front of you, rising on the eastern horizon at noon, half illuminated. She can seem evasive, irrational, incomprehensible. I assure you, with enough awareness, her rhythms become predictable (but never fully graspable). She moves signs every 2.5 days, visiting each sign in a solar season. She will go through each of her 8 phases over the course of the season, pulling at how we experience the quality of the Sun’s light.
For a full guide to Luna’s rhythms, check out ‘A Journey Through the Stars’.
Luna is the emotion we need to see life in full color and with the depth of our extrasensory. Adding to the music of the spheres, she would be the rhythm, tone, and texture of a song. She might speed the melody up one moment, slow it down the next, add harmony, or do something that imbues texture. She emotes, creates mood, and unveils atmosphere. Her ebb and flow bring our musical connection to feeling ‘mystically in season’ into a sense of fulfillment.
the music of the spheres & our lifestyle
attune to a harmonious life through the sun-earth-moon rhythms in your chart
How does all this music talk relate to living a lifestyle attuned to astrology and seasons? Let me show you through the Sun-Earth-Moon of the moment in which I’m writing this. Stick with me for a bit more music talk and then I’ll dive into more concrete thoughts.
It’s currently Sagittarius Season when I’m writing this. I want to understand the beat of the moment before I get to the melody, so I look to Earth. I know that Earth is on the other side of an axis from the Sun, making Gemini the current Earth placement. Gemini is lively, lighthearted, curious, and flowery. I might choose a slightly picked-up beat, like my heart is a flutter.
Adding some solar melody on top of this foundation, Sagittarius has darkness and hopefulness in its makeup. It takes aim, finding a guiding light in the long nights of its season. It has hopes and dreams, vision, exploration, and seeking in its creative essence. A melody with an ascending quality.
As I write this, the moon is in Capricorn in waxing crescent phase. The mood in Capricorn is a bit still and quiet, foresightful and planning. In waxing crescent, something new is incubating. Surprising things are bubbling up—originality and spaciousness. I might add an electric quality for the moon phase and some quiet, almost meditative, spaces for the melody to be carried by a voice for a Capricornian touch. A song that keeps coming to mind is ‘Dreams’ by The Cranberries.
Let’s ground this into my chart to see how one might apply this musical analogy. How one might live it. Starting with the foundation of Earth in Gemini, this soothes my 7th house of relationship/s. To feel grounded, I might have lively and witty one-on-one conversations, especially with my husband. I might design something flowery. I might write something that taps into the quality of harmony (wait, that’s what I’m doing right now!).
Moving to the solar season of Sagittarius. This is my rising sign so I know my creative expression (melody) needs a lot of personal space right now to get back to my core and what lights me up—vision, exploration, philosophy, storytelling. I feel very energized today, in my own space with no distractions as I connect to my astrological philosophies and find a way to share them on a platform. A way to share them that feels authentic to who I know myself to be.
Adding the (waxing crescent) Capricorn Moon to the mix highlights (just for today) my 2nd house of personal values and pleasure. My mood is giving me extra focus, it seems to be saying This focus feels valuable and pleasurable—write with pleasure, add notes of beauty into the mix, beauty that’s classic and stands the test of time. The waxing crescent phase of the Moon teases originality out of the Sun. Through Sagittarius, I have felt surprised today by the associations that seem to be coming out of me from who knows where adding to my philosophies.
While all that I’m doing naturally aligns with the Sun-Earth-Moon rhythm of the day, I could also step back and ask where I’m trying to force things that aren’t harmonious with the flow of energies. I could wake up and purposely find a song that feels like the daily energy to inspire me, or make daily intentions that align. I could be more purposeful and intentional with my time and energy. I might intentionally find something to make my husband laugh once I throw the towel in on work. I might read something from another astrologer that inspires and pushes my creative perspectives. I might put effort into preparing a dinner that my senses will savor.
Many other planets and energies in astrology affect our lives, but not as directly, rhythmically, or impactfully as the Sun-Earth-Moon rhythms in our day-to-day lifestyle. If you bring awareness to these three and their entanglements, you’ll typically be 70% (in my estimation) on top of the flow of life. With this foundation, the plot twists, interventions, surprises, and pivots that the rest introduce won’t knock you off balance as easily.
